You Deserve to Feel Safe, Loving Connection
Love starts out with a rush of excitement and energy. You can’t stop thinking about your partner. You want to be with them night and day. When you’re not with them you want to be on the phone with them. And you can’t imagine your future without them.
Then, after the first few years (sometimes less) have passed, reality sets in.
They might not be the person that you thought they were. You’re starting to notice areas of disagreement or annoyance. Why do they laugh like that? How come they never help with the chores? And who doesn’t love ramen!?
People come with different beliefs about important matters like parenting, finances, sex, religion, gender roles and more. When two people with different firmly held beliefs try to make love last and grow, it can be very hard and there’s no shame in seeking out support to help you succeed.
So, couples therapy is here to help you and your partner understand each other on a deep level. At Destination Therapy, we use Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Solution Focused Therapy and Narrative Therapy to help you and your partner:
- Argue less frequently (yet more effectively if you do)
- Reignite your passion - and keep it - with passion-building exercises
- Have more fulfilling physical and emotional intimacy
- Feel secure in your relationship with deep trust-building
- Reconnect to your relationship or marriage’s purpose and commitment
- Notice the nonverbal ways your partner is trying to connect with you so you can respond with kindness and appreciation

Couples Counseling FAQ
What is couples counseling?
Couples counseling is therapy focused on two partners in a romantic relationship. This can be two individuals who are married or dating, and can be a heterosexual or a homosexual pair. We also work with non-traditional couples, so just ask if you have a special concern.
Couples counseling helps partners learn to understand each other better, argue less yet more effectively when they do, make progress on difficult topics such as parenting, finances, and vacations, and develop healthy individuality as a pillar for romantic love.
How is counseling different from therapy?
Counseling is used as a synonym of therapy in most contexts. At Destination Therapy, we use the terms interchangeably. The important thing to know is that you’ll get high quality mental health care whether we describe it as counseling or therapy.
Does couples counseling work?
According to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, 97% of survey respondents said they received the help they needed from couples therapy. Couples counseling can work if both partners are willing to put in the effort required to heal, grow, and change.
How does couples counseling work?
A couples counselor can help you strengthen your bond through teaching you and your partner healthy relationship skills, new ways to understand each other, and eliminating unhealthy behavior. Couples counseling is also helpful for addressing betrayal, exploring each partner’s attachment style, and focusing on the substance of disagreements for more complete resolution.
What is couples counseling like?
Your couples counselor is trained to remain objective and not “take sides” in your conflicts. Their goal isn’t to be a judge issuing sentences, but a facilitator helping you rekindle a deep love for one another. Your counselor will help you explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviors related to your relationship. Ideally, you’ll be able to take what you learn from couples counseling and use it in your relationship going forward. It can be difficult at times, but the process can be very rewarding.
Is couples counseling worth it? Is couples counseling effective?
We believe couples counseling is worth it, because your relationship and the happiness of you, your partner, and potentially your family is worth it. According to the American Psychological Association, couples therapy is 75% effective. We think that your relationship is worth investing in, because happiness is priceless.
One of our specialties at Destination Therapy is helping those with high stress positions. CEOs, entrepreneurs, professionals and more come to us for help navigating stressful work lives and the challenges that come with it.
What can couples counseling help with?
Couples seek counseling for help with parenting, family issues, vacation and travel, infidelity, finances, navigating family of origin issues and in-laws, and more. Couples counseling also helps develop intimacy, healthy individuality, boundaries, and understanding of one another. We hope to give you the feeling that you’re a team taking on life, together.
Why do couples go to therapy together?
For some couples, their problems can trace back to the relationship itself. If their relationship is worth working for, they come to couples therapy for help getting through their challenges. Couples come for help through rough patches and breaking points alike. Luckily, in most cases where both partners are willing to make a strong effort, couples therapy can help re-establish trust, safety, and intimacy.
Can couples counseling save a relationship?
Couples counseling is not a magic cure. It takes effort from both partners to work, and sometimes it can be too late for a relationship to survive. Other times, couples therapy can strengthen relationships to avoid their breaking down. It all depends on the issues, maturity and willingness of each partner, and other dynamics. When couples therapy cannot help partners save their relationship, it can help make break ups and divorce as amicable as possible.

Is it too early to get couples counseling?
We believe that if you’re committed to each other, it’s not too early to get couples counseling. As long as you’re disciplined or willing to become disciplined to do the work to make your relationship strong, that should be enough. Of course it helps when couples have some length of history together. But newer couples therapy can also prevent tons of problems, or learn tools to tackle them head on when they do pop up.
