Burnout Therapy in Houston

Society has only grown more productive over the last hundred years. But our work hours in the U.S. have increased! If long work hours and prolonged stress have you feeling sapped, our burnout therapists can help…

Let me ask you:

  • Are you feeling exhausted?

  • Is your energy all dried up?

  • Has your sleep gotten worse?

  • Have you become cynical or critical at work?

  • Do you lack satisfaction from your achievements?

  • Do you lack the energy and passion you used to have?

  • Have you become irritable and impatient with others?

  • Are you troubled by headaches, or stomach problems?

  • Do you force yourself to go to the office and have trouble starting?

If so, you may be experiencing burnout.

What is Burnout?

Burnout is a condition – mental, emotional, and physical – of exhaustion due to high, prolonged stress.

Those experiencing burnout may feel like they have little left to give. In other words, they don’t have any gas in the tank and may be running on fumes.

The effects of burnout can spill over into every area of life—including your home, work, and social life.

While it’s most often caused by problems at work, it can also be caused by important relationships, academic stress or pressures to succeed..

Some describe burnout as “constantly feeling swamped.”

It’s important to note that burnout is not a medical diagnosis, at least not yet. Researchers have yet to agree on a basic definition despite some studies having been completed. Some experts believe depression may be driving burnout.

What are the Five Symptoms of Burnout?

While there are many symptoms of burnout, these 5 are very common:

  1. Emotional Exhaustion
  2. Irritability
  3. Sleep disturbances/insomnia/nightmares
  4. A sense of lessened accomplishment or apathy towards work
  5. Fatigue

But there are many, many more symptoms of burnout…

How does burnout feel?

  • You may be exhausted all day.
  • Perhaps you feel unappreciated.
  • For some, every day is a bad day.
  • You may feel like nothing you do makes a difference.
  • Tasks may seem either mind-numbingly dull or overwhelming.
  • Caring about your work or home life may seem like a total waste of energy.

Still others report fatigue, apathy or dissatisfaction towards work, tension headaches, and

Gastrointestinal issues.

Burnout can blur the line between “really tired” and “too exhausted to function.”

Talk About These Signs and Symptoms with Your Burnout Therapist

The thing about burnout is that it can creep up on you gradually, until one day you realize “I’m burned out. I need a break or to make a big change.”

Those experiencing burnout report symptoms such as:

  • Gastrointestinal (GI) problems
  • High blood pressure
  • Getting sick more often
  • Recurring headaches
  • Concentration issues
  • Depressed mood
  • Feeling worthless
  • Loss of interest or pleasure
  • Suicidal ideation

That’s a laundry list of symptoms. So, what causes them?

What Causes Burnout?

There are two basic causes of burnout: feeling overworked and being underchallenged in your work.

Overworking oneself is far more common, and we at Destination Therapy have helped many clients recover from overworking-related burnout. We’ve helped medical professionals, business

consultants, attorneys and more bounce back from burnout.

So, if you have a heavy workload and long hours, if you struggle to balance your life with your work, if you feel out of control over your work, or if you work in a helping profession like healthcare, that could cause burnout.

Some high-stress jobs—such as lawyers, doctors, or police officers—may be more likely than those in low-stress professions to experience burnout.

Other reasons include unmanageable workloads, unfair treatment at work, confusing work

responsibilities, lack of communication or support, and intense pressure to meet deadlines.

How does a Burnout Therapist Help You Find Relief?

There are a few ways to fix or at least reduce burnout.

For one, take a vacation (and leave your phone in the hotel room!). Because burnout can stem from being overworked, a proper break can be an infusion of new energy.

But you’ll want to make some definite changes whether you take a vacation or not. It can be helpful for you to see a therapist who can help you think through these changes. They’ll suggest helpful boundaries and support you in asking for what you need.

Other ways to fix burnout include exercising, practicing mindfulness or meditation, and even eating healthy meals.

And remember – you don’t need to tackle burnout on your own. Why not hire a trained professional to help guide you back to a place of thriving?
