MARRIAGE COUNSELING
Marriage Counseling in Houston
Marriage counseling in Houston at Destination Therapy is for married couples who want to stop having the same fight, feel close again, or decide together what comes next. You’ll meet with a licensed therapist at our office in Upper Kirby, Houston, or by secure telehealth, and you’ll both be heard.
You care about each other. But between work, family and everything you’re carrying, your connection got harder to reach.
IS THIS YOU?
Does Any of This Sound Familiar?
- You feel more like roommates or co-parents than partners.
- The same argument about money, parenting, in-laws or chores keeps resurfacing.
- Trust has been broken, through an affair or in another way, and you’re not sure how to rebuild.
- One of you is unsure about staying, and you need a calm place to think it through before deciding.
- A big transition, like a new baby, a move or a job loss, has left you less connected than you once were.
You don’t need to be in crisis to start. Many couples reach out because they want their marriage to feel better.
OUR APPROACH
Affirming Care for Your Whole Marriage
At Destination Therapy, we believe you’re the experts on your own marriage. We bring warmth, evidence-based support and honest collaboration to help you shift the patterns that are no longer serving you.
Our care is affirming and anti-racist, and BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and intercultural couples can show up here as their full, authentic selves.
Over time, marriage counseling can help you:
- Talk about hard things without it turning into the same fight
- Understand what’s underneath your conflict, not just what’s on the surface
- Feel like partners again
TRUST AND REPAIR
Rebuilding Trust After an Affair
An affair, or another kind of betrayal, can leave both of you shaken. One of you may be hurt and searching for answers, while the other carries guilt and doesn’t know what to say. Many couples aren’t sure whether they can get past it, and it’s okay to admit that.
In marriage counseling, your therapist helps you slow down the conversations that keep going nowhere, understand what happened and what led up to it, and decide together whether and how to rebuild. Our team’s work with couples includes trust repair, and in every session both of you are heard.
WHEN YOU’RE NOT SURE
When One of You Isn't Sure About Staying
Sometimes one partner wants to work on the marriage while the other is thinking about leaving. That’s a hard place to be, and it doesn’t mean counseling is off the table.
Marriage counseling can give you both a calm, structured space to understand where your marriage stands before either of you makes a decision. For some couples, the work is about rebuilding. For others, it’s about seeing clearly enough to decide what’s next. Either way, you won’t be pushed toward a predetermined outcome.
FAMILY AND CULTURE
Marriage Counseling That Honors Your Background and Experiences
No relationship exists in a vacuum. Our cultural identities, family traditions, upbringing, and lived experiences all shape how we communicate, navigate conflict, and experience love and connection.
At Destination Therapy, our diverse team includes therapists who identify as BIPOC, Latinx, and immigrants, bringing a range of cultural perspectives and lived experiences to their clinical work. We understand that navigating cultural differences, family expectations, and competing values can add unique layers of complexity to a relationship.
Our approach to marriage counseling is culturally responsive, curious, and free of judgment. We create space for both partners to explore how their individual experiences shape their relationship, honor what matters most to them, and build a stronger connection on their own terms.
HOW IT WORKS
What Marriage Counseling Looks Like Here
- Book a free matching call. Our Intake Coordinator asks what’s bringing you in, then matches you with the right therapist.
- Your first session. Your therapist hears from each of you: your story, what’s been hard, and what you both hope will change.
- Ongoing sessions. Standard sessions are 50 minutes, with extended 80-minute sessions available at certain times. Your therapist draws on the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy. The 80-minute session gives you more time for deeper conversations.

FAQ
Marriage Counseling FAQs
How much does marriage counseling cost in Houston?
At Destination Therapy, our standard couples session is 50 minutes and costs $200. Extended 80-minute sessions cost $320 and are available at certain times. Your first matching call is free.
Does insurance cover marriage counseling?
Most insurance plans don’t, because insurers usually require an individual diagnosis. Some couples use HSA or FSA funds to cover their sessions.
Is marriage counseling different from couples therapy?
It’s the same clinical work. This page is written for married couples. If you’re dating, living together or engaged, our couples therapy and premarital counseling pages are a better fit.
Will our therapist take sides?
No. Your therapist doesn’t take sides. Both of you are heard, and the focus is on the patterns between you, not on who’s right.
Should we choose 50 or 80-minute sessions?
Our standard couples session is 50 minutes, and it suits steady, ongoing work. We also offer extended 80-minute sessions at certain times, which give you more time to slow down hard conversations. Your therapist can help you decide.
What if my partner doesn't want to attend marriage counseling?
Both of you are welcome on the free matching call, even if one of you isn’t sure about starting. It’s a chance to talk through your concerns, ask questions and understand how marriage counseling works.
Both partners need to agree to treatment before we schedule a couples session. If your partner isn’t ready, you can start with individual therapy, so you have support with your relationship while they decide. We won’t pressure either of you into treatment.
Can we attend individual therapy and marriage counseling at the same time?
Yes. One or both of you can be in individual therapy while you attend marriage counseling.
We prefer that your couples therapist works only with your relationship, rather than also seeing one of you individually. That keeps a balanced space where you both feel equally represented, and gives each of you your own confidential space. If either of you would like individual support, we’ll match you with another therapist on our team. With your consent and signed releases, your individual and couples therapists can work together when it’s clinically helpful.
Can we do marriage counseling online?
Yes. You can meet in person at our office in Upper Kirby, Houston, or by secure telehealth. Our couples therapists offer telehealth in Texas, Massachusetts and Connecticut. For online sessions, both of you need to be physically located in a state where your therapist is licensed at the time of each session, and we’ll confirm this before scheduling.
How long does marriage counseling take?
It depends on what brings you in. You and your therapist set goals together in your first session and revisit them as you go.
You Don't Have to Figure This Out Alone
If your marriage feels stuck, reaching out takes courage. Book a free matching call, and we’ll help you find the therapist who fits you both.
